    MIXED TAPE

    Ryan Crowder - San Francisco

Ryan Crowder is a San Francisco dweller and music gobbler. Sometimes he plays parties, and releases a series of mixes each year highlighting the newest and gooiest of what musicians have to offer. He's in love with SF's local queer art performance and drag scenes, comic culture, has been known to pat a couple bear bellies and digs any op for music and dancing. He is also an avid crocheter and seamster, and enjoys making things and stuff. Lots of times he shares his music dreams and nightmares through "the social media". He can be found on Twitter (@Crowderism) or at Sissboombah.tumblr.com.

    Intro:

I like pop music. But I like pop music that is a little more complicated than to be expected. Tho I admit its not that surprising how much i like synthpop in its many forms, but I don't claim to be highbrow. In addition to normal dancing I also enjoy sit dancing. Mellow things that just flow along are really nice too. I am sort of perpetually attracted to the catchy hook and can't deny how much pleasure it give me. So I went with that.

While listening to this mix tape I've made you, imagine us dancing to this stuff. It could be a fun time no? Or if you prefer, maybe we could just hang out and laugh around a table with some besties with this on. The 80s can be irresistible and I think you will find sounds based in high energy pop of that decade shaped this mix. Personally, this is a mix I like bringing with me on walk around the city. It turned out to be a lot about risky lovin', I don't really see how that happened. But here ya go!

    TRACKLIST:

    1. Margaret Berger - 4-E.V.E.R L.O.V.E
Ms. Berger came out of nowhere for me. She carries the pop torch well tho don't you think? I also like when people spell things in songs.

    2. Those Dancing Days - I'll Be Yours
From the latest album by these Swedish young ladies. I like the genre combo package they serve up as they earnestly pop out their feelings.

    3. Toro y Moi - Sweet
Ride the chill wave of Chazwick Bundick (yes that is his amazing name). Off a nice EP earlier this year.

     4. Queen of Hearts - Shoot the Bullet
This is totally the track I am in love with at the moment. I imagine a lot of pronounced hip back and forth happening whenever I listen. I also like to mouth the words in front of a mirror.

    5. Bronski Beat - Why?
I just love how this song starts. This is one of my fave albums and its one that mucho younger folk have surprisingly never heard of. Jimmy Somerville's queer political messaging just does it for me ok?

    6. Warpaint - Krimson
Another all lady band who bring it. Their tracks build and change up in the most satisfying of ways. Solid live show that makes one feel things.

    7. Active Child - Hanging On
Epic emotional realness realized. And can you sing like this guy? If you can please send me a voice note as I would really like to hear this.

    8. Rimer London - Love Dagger
Amsterdam based dude who likes some discoey electronic pop. I enjoy the booping.

    9. Spank Rock (w/ Santigold) - Car Song
I like them. I like her. I want them to be my friends maybe. I find this really fucking fun.

    10. Michael Sembello - Automatic Man
Dude who wrote the hit Maniac. I know, you never would have guessed! It sounds so different! Bite into the cheese, hold onto it and don’t let go.

    11. Zeigeist - Fight With Shattered Mirrors
Arty electro pop band of the mid-aughts. I wish I could have seen one of their art heavy live sets. But no worries, I am fine listening to this and the sharp dance moves that result from the chorus.

    12. The Cardigans - Fine
I felt like I needed some god damned indie pop on this mix or I was gonna feel queasy. Who doesn't like this breezy tune?

    13. Class Actress - Keep You
Another newish catchy pop gem of a song. It's chorus suction cups to your brain.

    14. Phantogram - Don't Move
Phantogram’s latest has been a really great listen over the last couple months. I know it caught fire on the internets, but this song is so good regardless of how much I think about listening to Beach House while it is on.

    15. MEN - Who Am I to Feel So Free (feat. Antony)
Vocals from Antony on a track representing queer political poppy dance music of the the timez.

    16. SSION - LUVVBAZAAR
A man that owned my heart this year. Queer sexy get down portion of mix engage.

    17. Jenny Wilson - Love Ain't Just a Four Letter Word
A lot of peeps may not know her, but they should. Well I guess her stint providing some vocals for the Knife's most popular track got her some attention. But still... her lyrics are awesome.

We haven't met? That's probably because I spent the last year hidden in an office, running Claude VonStroke's record labels; dirtybird and mothership. I was going to school full time and I was trying to keep my partner who has to live and put up with me. I wasn't out much beyond the label events.

When you're asked what kind of music influences your taste or sound, it's a hard thing to answer. I do like big, jackin' bass lines, but it really depends on the mood or setting that you're in, right? I like quite a range of music, so this is just a chance to shine light on a part of it. So, it flows, and it has just enough bass to keep it curious.

Think change of seasons. I hope you enjoy it.

Hard Ton is the XXL disco diva of the XXI Century! Italy is known for its big singers but this one really breaks the mould. His Sylvester styled falsettos conjure up the smoky, poppers-fuelled dancefloors of Hi-NRG mixed with a completely contemporary sound of accelerated beats and screaming acid basslines. Using, exclusively, analogue and vintage gear from the 303, 606, 707, Oberheim DMX, Korg Monopoly, MS20, Prophet V5, the list goes on and is a calling card to any gear-nerd.

But the music never becomes stiff or contrived, in fact it always remains fun, as expected when you play with equipment that lives and dies by its own unpredictable rules.

With his 150kg, Hard Ton is a Giorgio Moroder low-fat grooves model meeting a heavyweight Chicago Trax queen machine.

Favorites consisted of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Blancmange, OMD, and many more. That said, he always favored the one-hit wonders that made that scene so special.

When he came out in the NYC club scene of the late ’80s, spaces like Tunnel, Mars, Limelight, Roxy and Sound Factory gave him a crash course in NYC underground house and early techno music. He’ll still play an old favorite or two.

As a result, his current sound is a blend of the indie pop and house genres with hints of others as well (e.g. nu disco, acid house), relying heavily on his favorite remixers (e.g. Azari & III, Tensnake, Punks Jump Up, In Flagranti) as the basis for his sets.

I'm struck by the vulnerability of modern music.  Either it's so classic it hurts or played out--until it hurts. Old and new are measured in time release. While putting playlists together in sound designing there has cultivated a cross-section of reference points, from deep soul to techno, vintage rock to the undefinable, from the infinite disco to the infinitesimal. Beyond genre is connection. To me dancing exemplifies what my body defies...the realization of movement. Every breakthrough in sound design moves me to listen. With a determination to relate a community of dancers, listeners, and producers, there is sought an active appreciation of a single audiophile and his spintuitive craft.

It started with humble beginnings from around 20 years ago while traveling and dancing the West Coast, Tennessee, & Hawai'i, wild outdoor gatherings and dj parties. Growing up in California immersed me in timeless R&B, early hip hop, and synth heavy New Wave.  San Francisco and Portland, OR were home to self-taught, teeth-cutting, small-scale party throwing; including Spintuition (SF) and Vas-o-line (PDX) then eventually Coinslot (NYC) leading to a current residency so called Marinate, at Easternbloc in New York City, with the party's one-year anniversary in September. Being an active member and supporter of the artist/performance community, I strive to enliven dancefloors and multifaceted soundtracks. This is a live studio mix from home in Brooklyn.

We are seriously chuffed to have been asked to produce a mix for EMB. We may not be bears but we like to hope our love of a decent tune may gain us honorary status! This is a mix of the deeper kind, reflective of our love of the tech side of house, complete with soulful undertones and acidic touches.  Enjoy. xxx

Kate Wildblood and Queen Josephine are true house connoisseurs. About to celebrate twenty years of playing together both behind and in front of the decks (!) Wildblood and Queenie have seen that, done that and provided the soundtrack. Brighton based they love their home town and its vibrant club scene, having DJ’ed at some of the cities finest clubs including Wild Fruit, Sunday Sundae, Rebel, DSD, Audio, Together, Cash Queen, Monkey, Disco Deviant, Queer Nation and the Wild Fruit Dance Tent at Brighton Pride.

Queen Josephine is clubbing royalty, enjoying a regal reputation for producing majestic sets of the sweetest kind. Her Blitz kid days maybe well behind her but her love of a decent soulful, disco and funked-up groove is as passionate today as it’s ever been. Wildblood is exactly what she says on the tin. (Almost.) A bassline junkie Kate is a lass in love with electronica, disco and house, be it tech, funky, strung out or jackin’!

Wildblood and Queen Josephine. Clubbing royalty of the honest kind whose love of disco strings and decent grooves ensure they remain house kids all life long.

Catch Wildblood and Queenie at Wild Fruit Terrace Party, Audio, Club Shame, DSD and the legendary Sunday Sundae Mirrorball Party @ Brighton Pride Dance Weekend. 12th-15th August 2011.

    DJ HUGO SANCHEZ

SUBWOOFER resident DJ and promoter Hugo Sanchez is a multidimensional explorer of the musicsphere, which he tirelessly roams as a DJ, musician, producer and promoter. His experience as a DJ starts with the memorable Roman club night AGATHA, and goes on with COQ MADAME, the first queer party in Rome, which Señor Sanchez started in 2000.  For three years now has been organising and producing DISCOLOOSER$, a connoisseur night hopelessly devoted to the incredibly strange world of disco music. Besides DISCOLOOSER$ and SUBWOOFER, Sanchez, in association with the illustrious analogue poet Rodion, is presently producer of ROCCODISCO, an independent record label dedicated to dance music and avant-garde electronics. Again with Rodion, he is one half of ALIEN ALIEN, a duo producing a sort of gloomy, evil house music. Nicknamed "El Tremendizmo", Hugo Sanchez mixes his various influences into a very peculiar and bizzarre style, halfway between electropop and outrageously erotic techno-house, with a lethal dose of funk spread all over. He named himself after a famous Mexican football player who used to paw his team-mate butts every time he scored a goal.

    jamie o'sullivan - Portland, Maine

    http://www.mixcloud.com/jamieosullivan/

I have only been djing for a short while. About 6 years. I Currently host and dj(with guests) a monthly party called LOVE. A deep house, tech house and deep techno party at Flask Lounge in Portland, ME. The first party I had was called Laptop Lounge. Along with my friend Sean Carroll (a huge source of my music) we played an eclectic mix one Thurs. every other month at the Whiteheart in Portland. It lasted for about 3 years. I have, however, had 36 solid years of life on this planet and have been inspired by music right from the get go. Like a lot of kids growing up in the 80’s I was into rap music, break dancing, graffiti and skateboarding. While in the experimental high school years I was open to all kinds of new things. In 1991, Rave had just hit Maine and after my first, that was it. I continued to go to raves all over New England into the mid 90’s. Even hitting some in the Northwest while in college in Olympia, WA. Towards the end of the 90’s I met a dj/ dancer who became my boyfriend for 4 years. He had an enormous record collection and I got quite the history lesson in disco, house, and techno. He and I spent A LOT of time going dancing. We had friends in NYC and hit up Body and Soul as much as we could. Through those years I got to see how this music and culture was SO much more than just the Rave scene. Watching some of those NYC dancers just blew my mind!! After our time together I continued to seek out music and dancing. My djing is a natural progression of my life. It HAD to happen. I had been listening to this music for so long, songs mixed all by themselves in my head. I love it with all my heart and hope you enjoy this mix……some new stuff I’m into with a few old favorites. -jamie o’sullivan
